2023 Syrah

100% Syrah, grown by Gerard and Lucy Kennedy on the slopes of the Mt Camel Range near Colbinabbin in Heathcote. Wild-fermented mostly whole-bunch, with a small portion destemmed to add shape and structure. Foot-stomped and hand-plunged once daily before gentle basket pressing. Matured in 500L puncheon barrels (15% new oak) for 12 months, then blended to tank by gravity. 

Lush and vibrant, this Syrah brims with dark fruits of blueberry, mulberry and ripe cherry, lifted by a subtle twist of black pepper. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and moreish tannins, it’s layered with complex oak tones of sandalwood, vanilla and a touch of spice. Elegant yet energetic, it’s a wine that’s as at home with a slow Sunday roast as it is around a lively shared table.

Gerard and Lucy Kennedy cultivate a variety of crops, including tomatoes and winter wheat, but they’ve been growing Shiraz here since 2002. Recently, they planted a new vineyard focused on Mediterranean varietals that thrive in the local climate. Together with vineyard manager Barney Tuohey, they have developed a remarkable site with rich, healthy soil and thriving vines. These young vines are already yielding exceptionally flavorful and balanced fruit—a testament to their dedication to excellent farming practices. 

Heathcote's climate and soils are influenced by the Mt Camel Range, which channels cool south to southeast winds during the growing season. This natural airflow results in lower average summer temperatures, with January temperatures two to three degrees cooler than nearby Bendigo. The region experiences even rainfall throughout the year, and hillside vineyards rarely face spring frost. The slopes of the Mt Camel Range feature rich red soils over calcareous clay, known locally as Cambrian Greenstones.
